Hip Hop mogul, Jay-Z is giving away one-million copies of his upcoming album “Magna Carta Holy Grail” right before the official album release on July 4th. Jay-Z has teamed up with Samsung to release free copies to the first one-million people who download the album’s mobile app on their Samsung smartphones, starting June 24th.
This is an interesting move for Hov because those free copies won’t make a dent in the Billboard Charts. David Bakula of Nielsen Entertainment says,
”The freebies are not eligible for the chart. Billboard doesn’t count bulk sales or “free-to-consumers” albums.”Jay-Z already considers his 12th album as platinum selling. On Monday, the rapper jokingly asked if one million records get sold and Billboard doesn’t report it, “did it happen?”
Jay-Z unveiled his album plans in an extended Samsung commercial that aired during Game 5 of the NBA Finals Sunday. “Magna Carta Holy Grail” feature Hip Hop producers Pharrell Williams, Swizz Beatz, Timbaland and Def Jam co-founder Rick Rubin. Fans were then directed to visit the album’s website MagnaCartaHolyGrail.com.
Industry analyst Krista Smith says the campaign is a win-win for everybody.
Will you be one of the first one-million Samsung Galaxy users to download the app?
