In an interview with FUSE TV, J. Cole shared his inspiration behind creating “Crooked Smile”:
I didn’t have the Colgate, I didn’t have braces and [haters] definitely remind you. So [the song] is me taking ownership. Don’t get caught up in the little things–your weight or your nose or your eyebrows or your smile or your hair. Embrace your own flaws.
In the FUSE TV interview, J. Cole also shared how honored he was to have T-Boz and Chilli of TLC to lend their vocals to the song:
They loved the song. They loved the music I got T-Boz in L.A.  to do her part. I got Chilli in Atlanta. Just incredible experience getting them there.

I love this song! Very positive, encouraging and empowering. Kudos to J. Cole for creating an anthem that celebrates self-love and appreciating the beauty of one’s imperfections.
